Marine reserve inspires Opua students
Opua Primary School pupils, inspired by an "Experiencing Marine Reserves" visit to Leigh, are planning to action marine conservation within their own community.
Margaret Lange's class at Opua School were introduced to marine biodiversity and local marine conservation issues in the classroom and investigated the local marine environment at English Bay, before journeying to Leigh.
The students experienced New Zealand's first marine reserve - "The Cape Rodney to Okakari Point" or "Leigh - Goat Island" marine reserve, which was established in 1975.
An amazing abundance and diversity of marine life was encountered at the reserve and the students found it very different to the marine environment at English Bay.
They learned that marine reserves are great places to study marine life and produce many benefits for both people and the marine environment.
The Poor Knights Island marine reserve was established in 1981 making it New Zealand's second marine reserve. The unique environment at these islands have made it New Zealand's most popular dive spot.
In the meantime, a beach clean up will take place at Matai Bay tomorrow (April 22) to mark International Earth Day. A to Z Diving, the Doubtless Bay Marine Protection Working Group and
the Far North Environment Centre are organising the clean up, starting at 10.30 am and continuing until 3pm. If you are a diver, bring along your gear and help clean up below mean high water springs. If you are not into getting wet, just turn up and help comb the beach. Bags, gloves, air fills and some dive gear for the event will be provided free of charge. Meet at the main shower block at Matai Bay Campground at 10.30am.
